Simpson encourages students to serve as Senate pages
INDIANAPOLIS—State Senator Vi Simpson (D-Elletsville) is inviting area students to participate in the upcoming session of the Indiana General Assembly by serving as Senate pages.
Students between the ages of 12 and 18 may apply to serve as Senate pages while the General Assembly is in session. Students will serve in the State Senate for one day assisting with various legislative activities including running errands within the Statehouse, delivering messages and helping with a variety of other tasks. Volunteering as a Senate page is an excused absence from school.
Session begins January 7 and will continue through April 29. Pages serve only on session days, which are generally Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of each week.
There are a limited number of page positions available each session and interested students should email Sen. Simpson at s40@iga.in.gov or write in care of the Indiana State Senate, 200 West Washington, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204-2785, and include their full name, address, phone number, age, school, and two different dates they would be available.
Students may also contact Senate Student Services by calling 800-382-9467 or 317-232-9400 for more information on the program.

State Rep. Vern Tincher (D-Riley) is seeking junior high and high school students to serve as pages during the 2009 session of the Indiana General Assembly.
Pages will have the unique opportunity to spend an entire a day witnessing the inner workings of the State Legislature. They will begin their morning with a tour of the Indiana Statehouse, and spend the remainder of the day working alongside representatives, staff and interns.
“Paging gives allows students to see what they learned in civics class put to practical use,” Tincher said. “By seeing the Legislature in action, they will truly get a sense of how public policy shapes the world around them. It is an unparalleled lesson in good citizenship.”
Tincher indicated that the best days to page are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays when lawmakers convene in the House chamber for session. Pages are also accepted on Wednesdays, but lawmakers only meet in committee, not in full session.
Pages must be at least thirteen years old and must have their own transportation to Indianapolis. Students may page with a friend, but this must be indicated on their application.
Students interested in paging can contact Rep. Tincher’s legislative office in several ways:
– Calling the toll free Statehouse number, 1-800-382-9842;
– E-mailing H46@in.gov or;
– Writing in care of the Indiana House of Representatives, 200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204.
Those interested should give their name, the name of parents or guardians, e-mail address, home address and phone number, school name and two potential paging dates.
“If any student in my district has an interest in government or politics, I strongly encourage them to apply,” Tincher said.
Paging opportunities last through the duration of the legislative session, which begins on Jan. 7 and ends on April 29.

Democracy Public Art Project Debuts at Public Library
Bloomington—Yes We Can, the second incarnation of the highly successful Writing on the Wall art project, debuts at Monroe County Public Library (MCPL) on January 12, and will be exhibited through January 19, followed by a 10-day run at Indiana University’s Herman B Wells Library. Visitors to the exhibit will be invited to answer the question, “What are your hopes and dreams for American democracy?”
Director Sara Laughlin says the public library is especially pleased to be a partner in the Yes We Can interactive art project. “Under our new strategic plan,” she says, “we want to offer more engaging experiences for visitors, so this project is a good fit for us. Literacy and learning are crucial to a vibrant democracy.”
Yes We Can continues the Writing on the Wall public art project conceived by Bloomington artist Joe LaMantia in 2007 and cosponsored by Indiana University and the City of Bloomington. Proposed as a project for IU’s annual ArtsWeek in 2008, it began as little more than an idea, a blank wall, and a few colored markers. LaMantia placed blank panels in front of Bloomington’s City Hall, and passersby were invited to respond to the questions, “What is democracy?” and “What does democracy look like?”
Months later, the message-laden panels had grown to more than 76 feet, with thousands of responses, drawings, and comments in more than a dozen languages.
The project was displayed in numerous Bloomington campus and community locations, and with support from IU’s Moveable Feast of the Arts program, funded by the Lilly Endowment, traveled to IU campuses throughout the state, garnering the attention of TV stations, newspapers, and YouTube videographers. Today, a year and a half later, Writing on the Wall has touched thousands of lives and spawned this second-generation installation.
LaMantia says the coincidence of observing Barack Obama’s campaign, election, and transition to office while carrying out the Writing on the Wall project sparked the idea for the new Yes We Can exhibit. “The Obama transition team is using thousands of house meetings across the country to invite the American people to discuss the critical issues facing our communities and our country today. The first Writing on the Wall project did a very similar thing on a smaller scale,” LaMantia says. “Now that we have gone through an historic election, I wanted the project to ask a new question about people’s hopes and dreams.”
The Yes We Can exhibit serves as a “teaser” for ArtsWeek 2009, which takes place this year from February 19 to March 1, 2009. For more information, see artsweek.indiana.edu.

Indiana Conservation Officers are encouraging the safe and responsible use of Off Road Vehicles (ORV) through a free on-line safety course. “Today’s ORV Rider” promotes safe and responsible riding through a friendly, self directed on-line course. The course is designed so that the student can work at his or her own pace and at a time they choose. “For a number of years we have seen a steady increase in our ORV accidents” said Colonel Michael Crider, Director for the DNR’S Law Enforcement Division. “We made a decision a number of months ago to address the problem by offering this course. With Christmas just around the corner, we find it a perfect time for families, who have just purchased a new ORV, to be aware that ORV riding is much more than just starting the machine and punching the throttle” Crider said.
The online safety course presents a wide variety of information including, basics for off road vehicles, how to operate an ORV safely, what responsibilities the ORV rider has to others and the environment, and general information on how to be prepared for the unexpected.
Those wishing to test their knowledge can opt for a $30 Indiana certification exam, or take 1 or more of the free practice tests. Either way, the student should have a better understanding of ORV safety and the responsibilities that go along with riding accident free.
To learn more about Indiana’s ORV safety course visit: www.offroad-ed.com/in/ or type into your search engine: Indiana ORV Safety Course.

          Students interested in paging can contact Rep. Tincher’s legislative office in several ways:
